Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship

Sponsor your Parents and Grandparents

Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship grants to Canadian citizens and permanent residents the chance to bring their family members to Canada. Canadian Immigration Department (IRCC) launched this program to allow a certain number of citizens and PRs to sponsor their fathers and mothers, as well as grandfathers and grandmothers every year.

In 2019, IRCC allocated 20,000 spots for the Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship (PGP) program. The government accepted 27,000 intentions to sponsor, however, there were over 100,000 candidates willing to sponsor. The invitations to submit the full application were issued three months after the registration and eligible candidates had 60 days to submit the full document’s packages.

PGP in 2020

In 2020, the program is going to pass the update of the intake process. The government announced the program will not open in January 2020 and most likely the new intake process will be developed by April.

The quota for 2020 was first announced in the 2019-2021 Immigration Levels Plan and was increased to 21,000 spots.

Program eligibility

To sponsor your parents or grandparents, you must meet the financial criteria. Candidates need to prove they meet the income requirement set at the level of the low-income cut-off (LICO) + 30% in the last three fiscal years.

The number of family members also can increase how much money you must have. The more family members you have, the more money you need to demonstrate.

Processing time

The processing time of each case may vary depending on the complexity of the case. Nevertheless, IRCC estimates that it takes between 20 to 24 months to process the PGP application.

How many parents and grandparents were sponsored this year?

According to the data by IRCC, as of October 31, 2019, Canada granted permanent residence to 19,225 sponsored parents and grandparents of Canadians.

What to do if I won’t get an invitation to sponsor?

The super visa is strongly recommended to bring parents or grandparents to Canada for a long stay. The super visa is a multiple entry visa which is valid for 10 years. However, the length of the visa depends on the validity of your parents’ passport. Your parents will be able to stay with you for a length of two years for each visit.
